Rehat 8 and Database General Performance Question

Hi Everyone!

I'm a recent Linux convert and newbie, and have a basic question regarding my Redhat 8 install. I downloaded RH8 from Redhat's web site and installed it as a server. The only thing I'm using my new RH8 box is to run Firebird, the open source version of Borland's Interbase RDBMS. Everything works perfectly. My question is in regards to overall performance. When I boot up my RH8 box, I just leave the box sitting there in the GUI login screen. Is it true that max performance can be achieved by not booting into the GUI, but rather leaving the box running in text mode? I've heard, but can't confirm, that this lessens the burden on the CPU, hence maximizing overall performance.

Any other perfomance enhancing advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. LinuxQuestions.org rocks! What a GREAT resource!!!

Welcome to LQ.org, SweetPete!

Yes, if you don't need the GUI, definitely go without it. Judging by the hit on the CPU and size of the XFree86 package, I'd say you're effectively doubling the system overhead running X Windows.

Besides serious Linux/Unix users don't use GUIs.
