well you use ati radeon 9700 pro right?
i have a ATI Radeon 9800Pro and so the same drivers.
See what you can find on the hsync and vsync of your monitor and download the linux drivers for ati, once installed run fglrxconfig and eventually it will take you to your monitor where you have to enter your monitor's refresh rates. hsync and vsync.

you have to read the readme on the ati website, i had the same problem, it says you have to force the rpm using 'rpm -i --force fglrx-bla-bla.bla.rpm'

btw you also need the kernel sources installed to be able for fglrx program to build a kernel module for your ati card.
