redirect debug info

som programs likde kmail for example print lots of stuff (debug info and so) when executed from a shell (xterm).

how can I redirect this output to /dev/null?

You should use the > to direct the output. There are different output streams which you can redirect. 1 stdout, 2 stderr. Anyways the bash man page explains all about it. You should jump to the section REDIRECTION. If you don't feel like reading and want a quick answer then just start the programs like this:

programname &> /dev/null
