RedHat8.0 problems

I have two linux machines nfs'd to each other but one of the users from our group couldn't move files from one machine to another. The message said it was a read only file. I (being root) went to the home directory and noticed that where all the other users had their ownership listed as their names, the one with the problem had a number listed for owner. I tried to change owner but it just came back with a message that said it was changing a read only file. When it was done, it hadn't changed the owner. I tried to change permissions as well but it was the same story. Then I turned off the firewall on the machine that we were trying to look at from the other machine and the whole system went out of wack. If you tried to look at a directory on an nfs computer, the computer just sits there without a prompt and you have to open a new terminal to get it back. Also, when you logout and then backin, you get the normal toolbar on the bottom of the screen but all of the normal quick links are gone. The right mouse button no longer works either. Anybody have suggestions?

Thanks
