for a media player I like mplayer, its the fastest one I've ever used just takes a little time getting it compiled correctly. For music playback get XMMS, looks and acts like WinAMP but I think its much better. For a download program I'd recomend LimeWire or gtk-gnutella.

If you actually know any chicks, you're waaaaaaay ahead of most of us.... But, seriously, someone in this forum recommended "Running Linux" published by O'Reilly. I'm reading it now, excellent place to start.

If you want help with the many issues you posted here, start by searching the archives. There are multiple threads on pretty much everything you've mentioned.
