redhat GUI nightmare

i've been trying to fix this for awhile, my redhat 8.0 installation when X windows is started for my user account went haywire and looks like pop-up hell from a japanese porn site, everything is represented by question marks and periods. I started using root just to get to the web and then the X server started kicking me right back to command prompt after every 'startx'. Now i type xdm and get in but applets crash alot and i get kicked out to login and freeze up alot. Tell me i dont need to reinstall and lose my apps! Also if that is lost cause does anyone why know why my network between two computers is sooooo slow (nfs between two redhat 8.0) i even set the tcp window size to 8?? from the default 1?? thanks for the time-surfyogi

You might want to take a look at the output from the Xserver and see what kind of messages it is spitting out when it crashes.

Have you made any hardware/software changes recently? Just guessing?

Have you tried running Xconfigurator?

strangely enough there isnt an Xconfigurator in my redhat 8 also strangely enough their are no errors when the x server wont start except it says something like, 'record all errors not just the last ones when getting support', i'm thinking about seeing if kde will be stable. now that i'm thinking about software changes i did update the xfree86 to accomodate xawtv and it is usually running maybe i'll give it some time off-surfyogi
