Angry Redhat Freezes

I installed redhat up for dual boot with XP on an intel 567Mhz 810 chipset. The installation went smoothly. However after i say run Gimp, or change the background or create my printer (Photo smart 1000) and then shut down and restart the PC, it freezes when i try to run any application. Sometimes, the program will start but not close or it will not start at all or I will not be able to log out or shut down. I log in as root. The memory is 384MB and the HD allocated to linux is 19.7GB.

I have repeated the installation 4 times already.

Also my modem and sound does not work. My modem is HSP56 Generic and my sound ,Video and game comtroller is MI8783/C3DX PCI.

Thanks for your help.

Napoleon
