Redhat 9: What starts the X server????

Hey all....

I am trying to work out what part of the boot process and what script in particular starts the X server.

From the process list it looks like X is initiated by gdm, but what starts gdm...

I'd like to be able to prevent X from starting in certain situations, such as when I want to upgrade my graphics drivers, but can't find how to...

Thought I'd just be able to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but this just throws the session back to the login prompt with X still running...

Is gdm controlled by the init.d processing???

Any ideas most appreciated...

Thanks in advance

Chris

you want to boot into console? then edit your script /etc/inittab
look for
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:

it may not say 4, where it says 4, you want it to say 1 or 3 i believe, that SHOULD allow you to start up in console mode.
