redhat 9 and apache at the command line - help!

I've just installed redhat 9 (I've never used Linux before, so please excuse any/all faux pas). All the documentation I've seen leads me to believe that I can control apache from the terminal command line. I can't seem to pull this off. I "su" to root - then type "httpd - [whatever]" and I get an error stating that bash does not recognize the command. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!!!

yeah i guess you can change setting in text-mode (you can manually edit config files like you can do for allmost all linux software)

then if you are haveing problems using any linux software in text-mode try typing man [program name] (to get a manual page (help file)...

im not much of an expert, hope that this helps you some....

thanks for help

thanks for the help...

I've just discovered that it is not sufficient to "su" to root. I must actually login as the root user.

I did this and everything is working as documented.

Thanks again for responding so quickly.
