Hello all,

Is anyone experienceing a kernel crash on startup from the cd to insall redhat?

Here is an excerpt from an old post of mine:

My problem is with Redhat 8.0. I verify the iso's and then burnt the cds, when I tried to install on my server, the install craps out with a message similar to this:

...changing IO-APIC physical APIC ID to 2...ok.

Under EIP is at....

The rest of the message says ....

In idle task - not syncing

Also the keyboard light CAPS lock and scroll lock are flashing when the kernel fails.

The server's config is as follows:

Dell Poweredge 5166-2

Dual 166 Mhz processors
256 MB ECC RAM
8GB Seagate IDE HD
Two 10/100 Network cards Linksys/3com
On board PCI SCSI BUS (NCR)

Can anybody help me out?

Thanks Everyone, in advance!!

Cyan20

Note RH 7.3 didn't work either, server is currently running rh 7.2 without problems.

For an error like this I would suggest you enter a bug report at http://bugzilla.redhat.com.

not syncing too

I have the same trouble at boot, Cyan20, have u succeed to find where is the trouble ?

i've got the same problem... there's a workaround for it... try at the first install-screen (where you can give the boot-options): linux noapic

This command tells the kernel to not use the APIC chip. This command may be helpful for some motherboards with a bad APIC (such as the Abit BP6) or with a buggy BIOS.

good luck!

THE solution

Thx for answering, but i've fixed it.
The trouble was with the SDRAM, in fact one of the sticks doesn't work properly i though.
Finally i've put it off, and it works fine now.

Anyway thx :)

P.S.: Dunno why this happened, coz windows 2000 worked perfectly with both sticks of SDRAM o_O
