RedHat 8.0 Problems

I recently installed RedHat 8.0. I also have Mandrake 9.0 on this computer > Mandrake lists all my drives,partitions & cd/dvd rom drives in /etc/fstab including the hard drive & dvd rom connected to my Audigy Firewire connector.

RedHat only lists it's partitions in /etc/fstab.

Hardware Browser will not work in RedHat 8.0 > it flashs on the screen for a second then dissappears.Why is this happening? I need this so I can locate various devices to mount them.

The IEEE1394 & sbp2 modules are loaded but I find no info for the Firewire hard drive (sda1 in Mandrake) & the dvd (scd1 in Mandrake). Why aren't these devices showing up?

RedHat partitioning > documentation on the RedHat site says to have 75mb /boot partition > a swap partition at least twice the amount of ram > and the rest / (root).

I have 512mb of ram > do I really need a 1 gig swap partition?
Is there an advantage with Redhat of not dividing up he partitions as Mandrake does: /usr/ > /home > /var etc.. ??

Any answers/tips will be greatly appreciated!

From my experience when this happens, its either the program was not installed or a dependency/library wasn't installed for it to work.

different distros come equipped with different ways of detecting hardware. Most likely you might need to reconfigure them the hard way.

I tell everyone No on this. Usually for /boot, its only good to have a larger partition only if your going to have more kernels configured to boot to. I tend to make either a 16 or 32 Meg partition and that usually works, never running out of space.

And the swap, never, especially if your going to be using it as a desktop. My desktops I tend to never go over 200 Megs of space and they are rarely ever touched. Maybe if you ever have a high load like on a very busy server, you could make more swap, but most computers these days, there is enough ram to load everything that is needed.
And usually there is an advantage to breaking up your partitions. Like /var and /tmp, files are changing all the time, like log files. Imagine if your log files kept building up to take up all space, then your system stops working. If you have them on your own partition, when it fills up, the rest of your system and partitions are unaffected... that should give you an idea why its good to have more than just a /boot, / and swap.

Thank's for the reply. As far as the partitioning goes > from the materials I've read > (including FreeBSD) all recommend the separate partition schemes that Mandrake uses. That's why I was suprised that the RedHat documentation recommeded only the three partitions.

"different distros come equipped with different ways of detecting hardware. Most likely you might need to reconfigure them the hard way"

Any details on how to do this? I finally was able to compile a kernel and successfully boot into it > the error message for the IEEE1394 /SBP2 module about not being able to log into the devices now comes at the very end of the boot up messages instead of earlier.

Hardware Browser > I downloaded the rpm for it > installed it > same problem > I've seen a few posts about this > so I'm not the only one running into this problem.

Any help as always is appreciated!

Try removing the Firewire cardbus card. I have the same problem with RedHat 8 and am looking for a driver to use. The Hardware monitor works fine if the Firewire Cardbus card is not plugged in, otherwise it flashes and dissappears.

Oh ya, forgot to mention it's Redhat 8.0 psych
My processing speed is 333MHz P2, and I have a very old video card(4MB) and sound card. Which brings another problem...
Where can I get something for redhat that will detect my sound card, well not detect it, but get it to play sound. It did not play sound when i used mandrake, and i had to get a special installer for windows to use it.
Thx in advance

Thumbs up Hardwar Browser Fix for Redhat 8.0

The hardware browser does not work on redhat 8.0. Here is a fix for that. It involves editing the code. Its very easy to apply.

In the file

/usr/share/hwbrowser/DeviceList.py

on Line 91, Replace

def get_category_string (self, key):
return self.type_mapping[key]

With

def get_category_string (self, key):
return self.type_mapping[key-1]

(The only change is from [key] to [key-1]).

This changed fixed the hardware browser for me. I have a firewire card, which might be creating problems. The browser works great now .

Unhappy Getting warmer

Tried the fix from dwipal (thks ). The browser comes up now, but everything is in the wrong place, i.e. modem gives monitor information, monitor gives modem information, etc.

Any other ideas??
