redhat 8.0 prob
 

Is there any problem with Redhat 8.0 or any bug or services gives prob?, i have 2 redhat machines installed on p4, 40gb hdd, 256mb RAM and daily it hangs for 20-30 mins and i don't hv much applications or users in it. i just have samba, apache(intranet) suddenly it hangs. There is no specific time for that to hang. any bug or something??. any advice/help reagrding this?

Does it hang at boot? When does it hang? Does it hang about the same time daily?

How new is the load? What is the CPU Load?

Is the HD full?

well, it does not hang at boot time. it hangs when working on it or sometimes when nobody is working. There is no specific time for it to hang once a day or twice a day it hangs for 20-30 mins then it comes back to normal or we have to reboot the machine. Usage( cpu/memory) is not much . 40gb hdd is there and earlier /var was 98 % usage and now i hv created space . currently is is using only 34 % space. I ahve also stopped GUI (/etc/inittab to init level 3). what could be the raeson.

could possibly be a hardware problem? Can you trust that all the hardware in that comp is 100% reliable?

When things like this happen, you have to take everything into consideration.

may be do a ps ax and see whether 'updatedb' is running

this same problem happened with me as well

updatedb is not running when i typed ps ax, now what next?..

I have this almost same exact problem, so I want to hear this... :)

I think jay may have hit it on the nose when he suggested "updatedb". Every day, around 4:20 PM, updatedb runs on my computer and uses up 35-50% of my processor.
