Red Hat Linux 8 hangs at initializing usb controller (usb-uhci)
 

Something to what out for:

I installed Red Hat Linux 8 on my IBM NetVista machine. The install went fine. My dual-boot is fine.

But here's a problem.....

First boot up and many subsequent bootups failed at:

Initializing USB Controller (usb-uhci). Reboot (power off and on), again and sometimes, system comes up and sometimes hangs.....

I looked at /etc/modules.conf file
and this is what I found....

alias usb-controller1 usb-uhci

I took out 1 from controller and saved the file. Reboot and the system didn't even hang once.......

he is trying to let people know about this so they'd know how to fix it if they come across this problem. This is true i had this problem before, i guess it was having some conflicts with the usb controller. I did the exact same thing and it never hanged again.:)

lol I knew, but some people search for posts with 0 replies. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't run into this one again.

I'm having a similar problem on 7.2. It has happened three times in the last month. The past two I reinstalled linux and it fixed the problem, but I'm sick of doing that and hope that I can learn a bit more in order to resolve it and keep my current install.

My startup stops after "Setting hostname localhost.localdomain" (Verifies that this can happened with OK). Since Initializing USB Controller or Mounting USB Filesystem is next in the order, I assume it's a problem with that process. Unforunately, my system never gets past this regardless of how many time I reboot.

I've tried editing module.conf as suggested in this thread and that doesn't do anything.

I looked at the rc.sysinit file and wonder if I can do anything there? Or, would upgrading to a newer version of linux help? Or, installing an upgraded kernel?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreiated.

I am having this problem with RedHat 7.2 also.... but the interesting thing is that it has only happened since I decided to put WinXP on the same box.... here's a brief history of my install....

Installed NT 4.0 and then installed Linux and put grub on the MBR This dual booted beautifully, no problems at all.

Decided to "upgrade" to WinXP. This trashed grub from the MBR so only booted XP

Tried booting from Linux floppy - hung at 'Initializing USB controller'

Decided to re-install from scratch.... (as I am a newBee it seemed easier as I dont want to boot from floppy anyway)

Installed WinXP then installed Linux following note I found to create linux.bin on WinXP partition and use WinXP to dual boot with Grub on the /boot partition.

Now I find that if I boot into WinXP first, then shutdown winXP and choose Linux, then machine hangs everytime as "Initializing USB controller"

If I boot into Linux from a cold boot, then it does not hang, but does give me an error "insmod usb-ohci failed" This doesnt stop Linux from booting, and as far as I can tell everything is working ok !

I have only just got this far yesterday evening, so havent done any checking out yet... but would appreciate any feedback or suggestions what to check (I will check out the /etc/modules.conf file suggestion tonight)
