Red Hat 9.0 hangs on startup

I've searched the Internet and this forum and didn't find any answer to my problem. Maybe because I don't really know what keywords to search for.

My Red Hat was working fine. I spent some days without using it and when I tried to boot it, it didn't work anymore.

All seems to be starting up just fine, all the usual messages. I get the text mode login prompt that disappears as expected because X is suppose to start. But all I get is a black screen.

I can not go into text mode using ctr+alt f1
Can't terminate X
Can ssh to my machine from another in the same network

It seems to be completely stopped.

I tried booting up using the CD and linux rescue
I get the shell and I can browse my file system. My problem now is where should I start trying to find out why my system hangs? I tried looking in XFree86 logs but I didn't see anything different from my older logs.

What else can I do?

Try booting into single usermode
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/l...ng-single.html

Then edit /etc/inittab .. Where it says id:5:initdefault change the 5 to a 3.

Try rebooting..

This will boot you to the textmode login rather than the x login screen.

Login and backup your XF86Config file in the /etc/X11 directory then remove it.

Run redhat-config-xfree86 it will give you a fresh XF86Config file. Try starting X using this config. Watch the logs for missing mouse or other errors..

I would try this first if you haven't..
