Red hat 8 hangs in booting...
hello -
i am pretty much a total newbie to Linux, but would really like to get it working. i have installed RH8 on my first hard drive, (it shares it with Win98) and the install completes fine, and all seems to go well.
it starts booting, but suddenly stops in the middle of the 'OK's' - normally on the line reading "Finding Module Dependencies" (it does not proceede to the OK) and then hangs.
it has once booted past that point, but hung on another line, i was wondering how i could sort this out. i have reinstalled RH8 a couple of times (formatting all the linux partitions each time) and as far as i know, all the partitions are big enough.
i'm running an AMD xp2000 on an asus A7N266-C (which gave me problems with GRUB, so i'm using Lilo)
Thanks,
b.

What happens if you pass the word single
as a parameter to the linux kernel on the lilo-prompt?
This should pull up the most basic linux-setup,
single user, no network ...
Just want to know whether you're going to
get a non-graphical login...
Cheers,
Tink

hi there -
ok, i tried to pass the word 'single' at the Lilo boot (i pressed ctrl-x to get the lilo text interface) but adding the word 'single' seemed to make no difference - it worked the same as if i just typed 'linux' (i'm probably not doing this right)
lilo seems to boot fine, i get the lilo choice of win98 or RH, and the only choices i can make at the lilo text login is win98 or RH...
when i boot from the (lilo) text prompt, it still hangs exactly the same as if i had booted it normally from lilo.
what is the best way to get the command to the kernel? i have the cd-roms if i need them, but i guess it's something else...
thanks,
b.

sorry, I wasn't precise enough...
select your "linux" with the arrow keys (or type it) and append
<space> single to the line before pressing <enter> on the lilo
prompt.
Cheers,
Tink
