I´m trying to install RH 8.0 on a P II 333 Mhz, 64 Mb RAM, 3 Gb Hard Disk, Intel Based motherboard. The install process goes fine until it starts to copy packages for installation. At some point (random) the hard disk stalls and install fails. No error messages, only blocked mouse, keyboard and HD led on all the time.
I´ve checked Energy Settings config., disabled on-board devices (Sound, Modem), uninstalled the network card, disabled Energy Savings settings, tried a text install, checked the hard disk for bad sectors, and at last, installed Windows 2000 without problems... I´ve checked the md5sums of the install cd´s, installed RH 8.0 with these cd´s on another machine and they worked fine.
I´ve tried with Mandrake 9.0, 8.2, Red Hat 7.3 and the problem is the same: when copying packages the computer locks up.
You could use a memory check program, maybe a memory problem, that could crash the installer, I recomend you memtest86 ...
Mostly installers have a debug log, in Conectiva is mi.log in /tmp, you could check if youre able to exchange terminals during instalation, and try to look something ...
That's a new distro for such an old machine, or are you going to be using console only? Have you tried installing it text based? (does rh8 support that still?)
Try using the text based intall option and see how you go, is there anything else on the disk? are you installing with windows on it too?
I managed to install the distro on the machine, doing a text install and with a minimal package selection. The computer booted perfectly, but when I try to install more packages, it stills hangs.
The weirdest thing is that when I install Windows 2000, everything runs fine! I don´t get any install errors or problems at all!
And yes, I´m trying to install this machine to act as a firewall, console mode. I´m using X only for certain configuration tasks.
It's probably soemthing with the package manager and X or something i'm not quite sure.....sorry
I don't know if the package manager runs via console, but you could choose which packages you want and install them one by one by doing i think rpm -ivh filename.rpm
