Red Hat 8.0 headache, problem starting up...need to use fsck?

I just installed red hat 8.0 on an HP Intel celeron 10 GB 600mz

with 64MB the other day.

Ive been able to use it no problem for a few days now until this

morning. I chose to enter the kde desktop and looked around

and decided to logout and shutdown. as the computer was

shutting down, the screen started flickering and finally stopped

and displayed a screen that was unreadable. I couldnt read what

the screen said and I didnt know what to do so I just shut off the

computer.

When I tried to turn on the computer again and start red hat 8

(it's the only OS I have on my machine) I received the following

messages

Your system appears to have shutdown uncleanly
press Y within x seconds to force file system integrity check.....
checking root filesystem

/ contains a filesystem with errors, check forced

(about 70% into the check the next message appears)

/: Unexpected inconsistency; run fsck manually
i.e. without -a or -p options

***an error occured during the filesystem check
***dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
***when you leave the shell

Give root password for maintenance
(or type control -D for normal startup):
(Repair filesystem) 1 #

Ive tried typing control D but end up going through the same

process and when I type my root password, I dont know what to

do next.

any advice?

I think I should also mention that Gnome is my default desktop

environment and I was checking out kde at the time. (When I

installed redhat 8 I installed everything I possibly could like a

glutonus pig.

at the filesystem prompt if I type my root password and do an ls -

la I have the following

.
..
anaconda-ks.cfg
.bash_logout
.bash_profile
.bashrc
.cshrc
.fonts.cache-1
.gconf
.gconfd
.gtkrc
install.log.syslog
.kde
.tcshrc
.Xresources

I checked redhats knowledge base and even did a search on

google and couldnt find any solutions.

If nobody knows what to do, can someone tell me how I can

erase my hard drive so I can start from scratch and just reinstall?

the good news (I guess) is that I just installed this the other day

so I dont have any important files or work to worry about.

Well i just fixed my problem.

I will post my solution, hopfully it will help anyone else who runs

into this problem.

not knowing what fsck was I entered my root password and did a

man fsck

once I read a little bit about it, I decided to do

fsck / (since / was where I was having trouble)

after that I answered 'y' where every time I was prompted to

answer.

at the next filesystem repair promt I did a control -D and

the system rebooted no problem.
