I found the problem ... I didn't put my domain name in
/etc/mail/local-host-names

now it works fine

I am having the same problem although I am not using qpopper just pop3 from the imap pkg. I am working to solve this and will keep you posted if I find a fix...........

by default the server only listens on 127.0.0.1,

you have to specify the address of the interface to listen on or remove the 127.0.0.1 to listen on all interfaces it should be in sendmail.cf


# SMTP daemon options

O DaemonPortOptions=Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA

I really am a newbie to linux so if this is a stupid responce please forgive me. It sound to me like you are trying to set up you own mailserver and are trying to set a domain name for it. This might be ok for internally send emails but no other (external) system is going to recognize your email sever where the name is unique or not.

The emails that you can get (externally) are the ones that you isp assigns. You can have your mail server pick these up and then hold and forward locally.

if you run tcpdump and send some traffic you will normally get a domain name listed for your machine.

You can use it by putting user@ in front of it but it may be easier to remember an ip address for some of those long domain names
