Unhappy recovering data from ext3

hi all:

kernel: 2.4.18-14
distro: redhat 8.0
File system: all partitions are ext3

1. How do you recover a file that was deleted? for example, I created a file named foo, trashed it to the recycle bin.

Then when I emptied the recycled bin, I realized I needed that file. The file was not "shreded". How can I recover it?

2. Same question as above but in this case, I shreded the file. Would I be able to recover it?

all HOW-TOs I've found are for ext2.
any ideas and links are welcome.

Ext3 is just like Ext2 but with a journalling system...
If you emptyed the recycle bin, it's too late, you can't do anything (well I think). Look again at ext2 HOW TO, it should be near the same.

You might search for undelete utilities over at I've seen a couple of utilties for ext2 file systems which should work for ext3. Hopefully you haven't written much new data to your file system.
