Recover from filesystem failure?
This is a system I haven't used in quite a while because I didn't know how to recover it but didn't want to give up on my data completely. So I've been procrastinating dealing with it. I've finally broken down and decided to ask for advice.

Fedora Core 3, I see the Grub menu, but booting halts after:

Decompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel
Red Hat nash version 4.1.18 starting
INIT: version 2.85 booting
INIT: no inittab file found

Enter runlevel: ?

Whatever I enter, I get the following:

INIT: Entering runlevel: ?
INIT: No more processes left in this runlevel

Booting from a CD into repair mode, I can see that hda1 is a boot partition, and hda2 is the old root filesystem, but at least some significant directories are wrong. /etc contains the exact same contents as /lib (which looks like normal /lib contents), and /usr/local/bin is completely empty. I think etc explains the missing inittab and failed boot.

Trying to upgrade or repair with the current or a newer version of Fedora sees no existing installation.

I don't know a whole lot about UNIX filesystems, but I'm hoping that the original contents of etc are out there somewhere in a way that could be recoverable with inode manipulation. Any ideas? Or am I completely out of luck?

This most likely occurred due to a power failure. FWIW.

Look in /lost+found in hda2.

Completely empty :(

Try running fsck on the partition from a LiveCD. Maybe it can at least find some stuff to put into lost+found.

There are now some files in lost+found, but nothing I can decipher to help me restore a bootable system. Oh well, guess I'm outa' luck. I can FTP off some of my data files, but I think I'll have to reload from scratch.

(Sigh. This is now the second Linux system I've lost due to power loss.)
