Recording Sound on Thinkpad T20
 

Does anyone have any advice on how to record sound on a Thinkpad T20 using the Cirrus Logic CS46xx sound chip?

I want to record sound playing through the speakers.

In alsamixer I have the "mix" channel selected for Capture, but I only record silence. I have tried recording using ecasound and arecord.

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed using xfce. I have tried installing pulseaudio but still only record silence. I know recording is possible as it works with Windows 2000.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply aus9, but I just meant recording music from file e.g. to make a mix.

Anyway I can answer my own question now.

Type alsamixer at the prompt. Default view of alsamixer is Playback. Play some music and check what is controlling the playback volume - it's most likely PCM. (Check by selecting with left/right arrow keys and pressing M to toggle mute / unmute.)

Now press Tab. This will take you to the Capture section. Arrow key along to Capture and ensure this is selected (press spacebar and the word CAPTUR in red will appear). Make sure this is set at a suitable volume (use up and down arrow keys to adjust). Now make sure Mix is selected, the same as for Capture i.e. toggle the spacebar to get the word CAPTUR to appear in red. There is no volume control for Mix. Arrow key further along and you will find ADC and DAC. Make sure only DAC is selected for capture and adjust the volume (mine is 100 for this). By default both ADC and DAC were selected for capture, and I assume this was what was preventing me from recording.
