reconfiguring the kernel
i am using linux on a normal desktop machine if i re built the kernel does this improve the performance if yes how much
celeron 1.1 ghz
512 sdram
14.1 ich lcd monitor
10 gb ide hard drive
sis 630 graphics card
have modem but no need
realtech ethernet

It will improve the performance, but not much, less than 5% I think... For desktop use it gives more when you recompile your window manager and the apps you use (but it requires many hours).

No, you can have both versions at the same time. You just need to have the newly compiled ones in another directory (for example in /usr/local, apps from RPMs are installed in /usr).
