recompiling kernel

im using slackware 8 and i got the newest kernel 2.5.6 but the instructions suck and didnt work so someone please help me switch kernels so my sis900 card will work

Whoa, a little kernel tutorial:

If the second version number is odd, that's a development kernel. The 2.5.x series isn't meant for joe-linux-user to have on their home box. Heck, half of them won't even compile through the normal instructions.

2.4.18 is the newest stable kernel. You want that one.

Two things:

What's hanging you up in the instructions?

What's the output of the command 'lspci', because if this machine has an sis900 NIC, then it should work by default... well, with some tweaking probably.

Cheers,

Finegan

I'm using kernel 2.2.19 under slak and it's supports my sis900 fine.

try typing: modprobe sis900

there's a lot of info in /usr/doc.

SiS900 and new kernel

I am also having trouble getting my nic to work, I've modprobed and insmoded then lsmod to see if it was loaded, and alas it is, but still not working. I also compiled the 2.4.18 kernel and when I boot that image then run kernelversion, I get 2.2 so it's kinda screwed.
