Recommendation for dial-up modem please

Hi, I would appreciate a recommendation for a dial-up modem.

I'm using 'Simply Mepis 3.3.2' and my computer is a Compaq Presario 7000, which has an AMD Athlon proccessor with 256MG Ram.

Currently I'm using a Modular Technology, 56K, V-92, external which will only operate at 9,600 with Linux.

Your help will be appreciated.

Lewis.

If it does operate, then it should be able to do it at full speed. Your init string is probably wrong.

Anyway, if you still want to change, I'm very happy with my Olitec Speed'Com. See if that helps:

Hi, Yves, thanks for your reply.

I haven't studied French in 50 years, so I'm pretty rusty on it and will need to look for an English version of it the website.

I'm a newbie, so I don't know how much sense my explanation here will make but here are my KPPP settings under the 'device' tab:-

Modem device = /dev/modem

Flow control = Hardware (CRTSCTS)

Line termination = CR

Connection speed = 460800

These are the default settings

.........................

When I read the 'help' section, under 'Modem Device', it seems to indicate that
/dev/ttys0 would be the default.

Under 'Flow Control', I just don't understand the explanation.

Under 'Line Termination' it seems to indicate that the default should be CR/LF

Under 'Connection Speed' it says to use the max. speed, so I guess I've got this one OK.

I hope this gives an adequate explanation of where I am at.

My modem is a Modular Technology (from Frys Electronics) 56K, V-92, external.

Kind regards.

Lewis.

I can't really help you too much as far as your modem is concerned, but if you still require another one, try a modem from US Robotics. They aren't Winmodems, so they work pretty much "right out of the box" on Linux.

limeylew, I'll see if I can help, I've got an Aztech 56k external modem thats worked great for a couple of years. As I'm led to believe, and someone might correct me here, all external modems are 'true' modems not winmodems and should work with Linux.

In KPPP - On the device tab reset Connection speed to 115200, all your settings are the same as mine apart from that one. Let me know how it goes.

Well, I found an EASY solution.

I ditched the Robotics, external, modem and got an internal (PCI) SmartLink modem with an SL 1900 chipset.

These frequently sell, used, for $3.00 on E-bay and I regularly get online at 50666 baud. Also, setup was as easy as falling off a log.

Hope this will help someone.

Lewis.
