recommend distros for 2 old puters

First off, I am currently running a knoppix hd install/debian on my main machine but I have two old puters I would like to experiment with and maybe give one to a coworker to tryout Linux. They are P2's. Each with a hard drive of 1.5 gig or so. Both onboard everything - but one does have pci slot to put in a soundblaster 128 (I have never managed to get the onboard sound to work in windows even on it). Winmodems. But, I do have an old external Practical Peripherals that Knoppix did merrily use in another box (although Lindows will have no part of it). Internet connectivity isn't paramount at this point - if I can get something going on one of them will be thrilled. I have downloaded lycoris and peanut - haven't tried them out yet. Anything else you more knowledgable folks might recommend? A GUI is important though I realize KDE and such isn't possible. The machines have 96 and 64mb of ram respectively.

I setup a p2 with gentoo and it works like a dream, but I had it running on the internet, almost required for gentoo . Do either of them have nics? If so, what kind?

One has a nic, but since I have no network I have never tried to configure it. This has been life in dirtpoor dialup country I never bothered to network my PCs here in the house. I would install from CD and I have no dreams of trying to share this blazing 56k internet connection (if I hit the lottery I will be getting cable the next day, actually I would be moving to some nice prewired McMansion The one with the nic also has a USB card (but a big din keyboard connector - it does have a PS2 mouse ooh!). Like I said, old scavenged stuff and maybe I could put them to use and play around with some other linux distros lest I fall into the comfortable knoppix/debian rut . My biggest hurdle will probably be the video on them. Whatever distro can recognize wins the race - if it can fit on those harddrives.
