Recognize the powerup method - powerbutton or timer?

I am tuning my living room PC and for recording timer and
wakeup function I would like to distinguish between user initiated
powering up and one triggered by acpi-wakeup.
This way I can then initiate powerdown after recording if the machine remains
on idle.

On the side, does lirc button presses register to some log? This way I would
know if there has been recent user interaction since powerup which would be an alternative working solution for me.
