Talking realplayer8

I downloaded RealPlayer8 from TUCOWS.It was a .bin file and I executed it under root.It does work, but I can't use a the path to the .exe to create a desktop application so I can change the default icon to a realplayer icon.Should I have been in root?Any causal relationship here?

You know, I have that installed from an RPM package, and I never could find the icon for it.

It runs from the command line as 'realplay', but when I try to create a shortcut on the desktop or KDE menu, there is no realplayer icon, so I use a generic one.

Anyone else got inof for this guy?

Wink realplayer8

I found a RealPlayer icon in Suse's application icons.I can link to realplay and use the generic application, but I can't change the icon to a realplayer icon without changing all the application icons to it.I'm just puzzled why I could do it with other apps. and not realplayer.Any more suggestions?

You know the great thing about KDE. You can use just about any size png image as the icon unlike windows which requires specific size/color depth etc etc. Just open realplayer and take a snapshot of the realplayer screen, open gimp edit it to about 60x60 size or so, save it in ~/bin/images for example and then click browse when choosing the icon and pick it. It works great for me for when i cannot find any icons for a specific application file.

icons

There is probably an easier way, but most programs (including realplayer 8 and 9[realone player]) come with icons in their directories. The default place that KDE looks for icons is /usr/share/icons, so I copy (or link) all my icon files to /usr/share/icons so I can use them for shortcuts.

Most icons are either .png or .xpm files, the ones for realplayer 8 are rp7.xpm and rp7mini.xpm and on my system were installed to /usr/local/RealPlayer8.

For RealOne player (in /usr/local/RealPlayer9) there are files named realplay.xpm and realplaymini.xpm
