Sorry for the misleading topic title but I got to noticing that I wasnt getting many views because of my boring titles. So I decided to try a different style.
Anyway I have converted a friend to linux!!!!
I know it may not be a big deal for you but it is great for me.
But I need help. I told him that I would have a live cd made for him tommorrow.
Now I also decided that I want to make my own live cd from my slackware distro as a learning experience.
And to start that experience off I need help with all these packages.
I havent used Linux for very long, but have already learned a ton because of using slackware. With that in mind I need help deciding which packages are useless in the pkgtool. I mean do I really need 17 mail protocols (exaggeration)?
Could you please help me! I mean this is technically and emercency. We could lose a linux user!
1. Please use descriptive titles, there are so many post some people won't even read posts with names like this
2.There is a slackware live cd which you might want to use instead for now, probably more stable.
3. Its hard to tell you exactly every package that you would need and that you wouldn't need for an entire operating system. Can you give some specific details please?
Again I apologize for the title and thank you all for replies. I appreciate all the info I can get. I have see the Slax distro and that was what intrigued me. I looked at linux-live and decided that I want to make my own. And with that I decided to kill to bird with one stone and make my friend a live cd from my own distro. As far as the details go, I dont know what you want exactly but I can give you want I want to do with my linux box.
I want to surf the net and send/receive email. --- I use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird for those.
I want to do graphics for some logos/icons/etc. --- I use Gimp for that. The best. (IMHO)
I want to program using Python (just simple stuff) --- I just want to make some stuff for my dads business
I want to listen to MP3s, Oggs, etc. --- Dont know what I would use. Xine? MPlayer?
I want to watch DVDs, Quicktime trailers, and stuff. --- Xine? MPlayer?
I want a basic Office Suite for school stuff --- OpenOffice is what I use.
I use Dropline Gnome for the desktop environment.
Other than that I don't need anything specific except for things to compile, install, and etc.
Hardware:
AMD Athlon XP 2200+
Samsung ATAPI CD-RW (scsi emulation)
Samsung ATAPI DVD-ROM
100GB Wester Digital HD
8GB Segate HD
512MB DDR
USB Keyboard
Logitech Optical USB mouse
19in Compaq MV940 CRT monitor
To save space you could just put one web broswer. Also killing 2 birds with 1 stone, you could use mplayer only and have mp3s and videos without xine or other apps. Sounds like a good learning expierence, have fun.
