[root@c83-250-89-253 ka]# cd essential-20050412/
[root@c83-250-89-253 essential-20050412]# ./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
[root@c83-250-89-253 essential-20050412]#

According to the manual '' ./configure '' should work. What is the problem?

Now you have to mv all those codec files into your newly made codec directory - first cd into the directory with the codecs and type mv * /usr/local/lib/codecs Then you have to go into your MPlayer install directory and run ./configure --enable-gui.

Pro-tip: install the font files and the skin files into /home/youruser/.mplayer/font and /home/youruser/.mplayer/Skins/default respectively.

As you see the following description, all the files are in 'codecs' directory.

[ka@c83-250-89-253 codecs]$ ls

[ka@c83-250-89-253 codecs]$ ./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
[ka@c83-250-89-253 codecs]$

Why didn't it work?

Reread my last post. Using cd to change directory, get into the MPlayer install file - cd /wherever/the/install/directory/is and then run ./configure --enable-gui.

./configure will not work at the moment for 2 reasons:
1. you are not in the install directory, you are in the codecs directory
2. you are root at the moment, if you install MPlayer as root at this point, you will not be able to use it.
Code:
$ cd /to/the/install/directory/for/MPlayer
$ ./configure --enable-gui
$ make
$ su
<enter root password>
# make install
