Real Player path
 

I have downloaded the Real Player. I just followed their instructions to install.

I got the following message:

Enter the complete path to the directory where you want
RealPlayer to be installed. You must specify the full
pathname of the directory and have write privileges to
the chosen directory.

What shall I write as the path?

The following is my folder structure:

Since you are installing as the user and not root, your home directory is the best path (as shown above). If you install as root, I usually use /opt or /usr.

Just leave it as it is. The install program is normally pretty good with it's suggestions - just hit enter.

Does the above means some problems when running?

All I can suggest is for you to run realplayer and see if it works. It appears that install completed.

It worked fine. I played a song which I downloaded from the Interenet using the RealPlayer.

There are some online dictionaries with pronounciation possibilities. When I clicked to get the sound, it complains about missing plugins. So I thought this RealPlayer would be the solution.

No, I can't get the sound. It is still complaining about missing plugins. Do you have any idea?

Which plugins are you missing?

I have the Mandrake Linux 10.0 version.

I looked at the following website and clicked the word 'champion' to hear the pronounciation.

There is a message called 'Additional plugins are required to display all the medial in this page.
Then there is a funny symbol.

I clicked it. A small screen appears under the title 'Plugin Finder Service appears and gives me the following message.

No suitable plugins were found.

The file is a wav file, so you need the Windows codecs. My tip (and this is what I have done): install MPlayer following the instructions on their site. Part of this is to install the codecs to your pc. Once this is done, install Mozplugger or MplayerPlugin, this will allow you to see video in Firefox, hear sounds and also use embedded documents (if you go for Mozplugger, that is).

I ran into some problems whilst installing.

These are binary codecs for use with MPlayer. They are useless for normal
Windows players (like WMP, QuickTime, RealPlayer, ...) as they only contain
the DLLs without installer and other fancy stuff needed to use them with
common Windows players.

Put the files contained in this archive in a directory where MPlayer will find
them. The default directory is /usr/local/lib/codecs/ ($prefix/lib/codecs/) if
you are compiling from source, but you can change that value by passing the
'--with-codecsdir' option to './configure'.

If you use a prebuilt MPlayer package it will most likely be /usr/lib/codecs,
see the documentation of your package for details.

In the past /usr/local/lib/win32 or /usr/lib/win32 was the default directory,
some packages as well as a few other Unix players like xine and avifile still

You need to create the directory. mkdir /usr/local/lib/codecs
