First check: I think you must start with the most easy,
so check if you have networking support enabled in your kernel. Also in my comp (mandrake 6.0), in the file
/etc/pcmcia/network.opts i have setup the network configuration:
ip address, netmask, network and broadcast address, i don't know if debian is the same.

Next check: Check if your card is supported.
I have installed pcmcia-cs-3.1.23 from sources,
it included a file: SUPPORTED.CARDS
where it list all supported cards, this version of the package is old and only supports the NetGear FA410TXC (my card :P) and the NetGear FA510C cards, so i think your older version pcmcia-cs-3.1.22 neither have support
for your card. So you may upgrade to a most recent version (weekend-game?)

Other check: The source package have a directory "debug-tools" with....
well the name explain all...
there are scripts that try to diagnose problems with modems cards,
network cards and the setup, try them.

More check: Also this old pcmcia-cs-3.1.23 included a PCMCIA-HOWTO, ver 2.81.
In the section " 3.2 Some client driver modules do not load " they
show simptoms of problems and explain solutions.
One of the simptoms is: " Inserting a card gives a high beep + low beep pattern "
so i think it's similar to your case and you can try they solutions.

Also, If you don't have the card inserted, a lsmod must show this modules presents:
ds, i82365, pcmcia_core.

Use the " cardctl config " command to check the status of the sockets.
or the " cardctl ident " command to get card identification information.
also check /var/lib/pcmcia/stab for information about the sockets.

Also in the PCMCIA-HOWTO, ver 2.81, In the section " 2.3. Startup Options " it says:

" The Cirrus PD6729 PCI controller has the fast_pci flag, which should set if
the PCI bus speed is greater than 25Mhz. "

Btw, lsmod in my comp show: pcnet_cs, 8390, ds, i82365, pcmcia_core.

and dmesg:

Lightbulb reaching network - no eth0

What distro are you using? I am using RH 7.3 on a toshiba laptop and I also had some problems with the FA411 card. I was able to resolve them using the tips below.

try ifconfig -a which will list all of your cards and if it shows eth0 w/o an IP address but with a MAC address when the system can see the card but doesn't know what to do with it.

then I entered the following command.

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.20 subnet 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255

(use whatever you want for the IP)

This added the card and set it up with the pcnet_cs driver and I was able to finish the configuration in the network manager.

I hope this helps

Oh my... that's very very old. You might have a pcmcia that predates support for that card. What's the output of:

/sbin/cardmgr -V

That'll give us the version of pcmcia-cs that you're running, and from there we can figure out whether support for your card is in there.

Cheers,

Finegan
