Random Server Crashes

I have an Ubuntu Hoary server with 4 NICs. All it does is IP forward traffic between subnets. And it does a pretty good job. But every once in a while it goes down hard and I can't figure out why. I can't find anywhere in the logs to indicate what the problem might be.

Can anyone suggest a way that I might be able to troubleshoot this issue? Is there somewhere I'm not looking? Is there some additional logging that I can turn on?

Perhaps open an ssh session into the server and tail logs.
eg. tail -f /var/log/messages
When it crashes you will hopefully see something,
even though the box is dead.

I don't know anything about Ubuntu, what kernel version is it? I ask because I having the same problem with my server but it's Mandrake MNF, 2.4.18-8, and the server will suddenly stop responding, no pings and doesn't respond to keyboard or mouse, I need to push the power button to reset the computer. When it comes back up, it's fine, like nothing happened.

Also, what kind of server is it? specs? could it be a hardware problem like a bad memory card?
