http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Ramdisk = what is it

2) why
http://www.tldp.org/LDP/sag/html/boot-process.html in my opinion to make this decompression and manupulation easier

3) for what reason, a ramdisk for a live cd ? or as a kernel parameter
pls specify your distro so others can be more helpful

well without needing a link its this
a ramdisk is a virtual drive (partition) to allow a system to populate it

if you do not have a hard drive for example then you create a ramdisk as big as possilble I have seen entries can't remember where at the moment that have

kernel ///blah blah root=/dev/ram blah blah

a cache http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Cache
