Ram Disks or toram boot

knoppix has a toram command, which copies linux to a ram disk and boots from there.

I would like to know if it is possiable to run
other distro's in a similar scenario?

Or create a ram disk and boot most of the linux kernel/modules from that?

The ideal solution is to boot off a ram disk, improving boot times.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks
Ben

I have tried knoppix with the 'toram' option and it seemed much slower.

I only have 256kram but even with the read access on my CD being much slower then either ram or HD it still ran faster.

try a poormans install somthing like this:
boot: knoppix tohd=/dev/hda1

from then on use this command:
boot: knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda1

It's boots much faster and free's up RAM for loading the kernal and programs.
You can even save the config file to hda1 using the save config option.

Then boot like this:
boot: knoppix fromhd=/dev/hda1 myconfig=/mnt/hda1

SLAX will work similar but is unable to write the config file to your HD (which can get quite large), so it's kindof a pain.

good luck
KC
