RAID using whole disks or partitions

I use slackware 13.1 and I want to create a RAID level 5 with 3 disks.

Should I use entire device or a partition?

What the advantages and disadvantages of each case?

If a use the entire device, should I create any partition on it or leave all space as free?

How are you making the raid array? Is it hardware or sofware?

I'm using RAID 5 with metadata 1.2, ext4 and using whole disks. I read this guide https://raid.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Linux_Raid

and some pages searching in google.

I read that partitions on disk is only necessary if the disks are not the same size. But my disks are all from the same brand, model and size. I think for that reason I don't need make partitions.
Besides I have reading the IO read and write on array and it seams that I have best performance with whole disks that with partitions.
