RAID aware

How would one know that a software RAID device has gone bad? Does the kernel log it in syslog somewhere? I have a Red Hat 9 with software RAID1. I was just curious where I would expect to find alerts if a disk dies in the RAID set.

i would assume, if one of the disks fails, you'd get some kinda audible alarm notification... maybe from the system speaker and stuff...

you could use "smart" to get a heads-up BEFORE the disk fails:

cat /proc/mdstat

also mdadm will mail you upon failure among other userful things
