Radeon 9600 Pro and fglrx
 

Hey guys, my first post. Just some brief info first. Im very new to linux. I am running gentoo with kernel 2.6.13 and GNOME desktop. My system is an Athlon64, BUT im running only an x86 version of linux (since im new didnt wanna learn Linux x86-64)

Now im trying to get my 3d acceleration working for my Radeon 9600 Pro. First ill take you through the steps ive done.

Now i compiled my kernel with everything it says, and AGPGART as a modules, aswell as my correct chipset.

I then booted to that kernel, and typed "emerge ati-drivers"
i followed by doing fglrxconfig and set it up perfect to my specs.
next, i "opengl-update ati"
following this, i made sure all the modules were running and started X.

X gets all funky on me and freezes up. This is when "UseINTERNALAGPGART" is set to "yes". It is this error, as found in the trouble shooting of the link that i posted.

If you encounter this behaviour, check that your AGP aperture size is at least 64MB in size. The aperture size can usually be altered via your computers BIOS menu.

Im am 100% sure that aperture size is over 64. actualy its 128.

If i change "UseINTERNALAGPGART" in xorg.conf to no, it will boot perfect, but it runs Mesa drivers under "fglrxinfo" not the ATI ones and therefor no 3D Acceleration.

Not sure what im doing wrong gents.

Any help is much appreciated, this is a great board.

Are you using the graphics driver comes from ATI's website? I guess there is no need of compiling a kernel, hardware support of kernel is ok in most popular distributions.

Im not sure if im using the ATI drivers. Im using
ati-drivers-8.18.8 if that matters at all.

No, I changed the "hxxp" to "http" but it seemed not a valid URL.

Maybe you got the driver from gentoo's official site. But I recommend that you use the driver released by ATI:

If your gentoo distribution is new enough, you won't need to do much unless following its install instruction and have some configurations(especially not concerning kernel).
But if your distribution does not meet the requirements of the driver(i.e. X.Org is too old), you'd better not try to compile and install a new X.Org, you will get more trouble, trust me, I have experienced that with a FC2, and now that box will cost about 2 minutes to boot with the hard disk working all the time.....
