How to make the ATI Radeon 7500 work on Mandrake 9

Hi there. I had the same problem and after one week, thank to God I solved it. Here is how.

First of all install Mandrake with VESA drivers and with the Developement packages.

After that you will need to get a new kernel from www.kernel.org (2.4.20 will do).

Extract and recompile it:
If you want to keep the old settings you can go in /usr/src/kernel-2.4.19-24mdk , type "make menuconfig" and choose the last option to save configuration to a different file. Then copy the file in the directory where you have the new kernel, type again "make menuconfig" and choose the last option on the list that allows you to load the configuration file saved before. Keep in mind that if you precise to menuconfig the type of microprocessor you have and take out unnecessary stuff you'll get an enourmous boost in speed.
But, back to our dear ATI Radeon 7500...

You can then download xfree 4.3 and select ordinary Radeon drivers...

or

go also for the accellerated ones at http://dri.sourceforge.net. Unpack all the stuff in two different directories, install xfree with "sh Xinstall.sh" without overwriting old configuration files, install the accellerated drivers with ./install.sh and enjoy hardware accellerated OpenGl graphics :-)

You can test if everything works by typing glxgear inside a terminal. Without hardware accell. I get 110fps, with dri radeon drivers over 700 :-)))
And if you really wanna see something special download Blender from www.blender3d.org

Message me if you still have problems.
Good luck! :-)
