BTW, AFAIK corsair doesnt actually make any power supplies, they just rebrand other power supplies. Mostly seasnoic, who are always very good, and quite often the corsair versions are cheaper. Quote:
As for the connectors, there has been some corporate machines with non-standard ATX power connectors (mostly dell). They are rare, and pretty old, and your motherboard (Abit SG95) has all standard connectors, so you wont have any problems with that. |
Just a follow up to say I installed a Corsair 430w today (a doddle!) and things are a great deal quieter now. Not silent, but a hell of a lot better than before. Again, thankyou cascade9 and TobiSGD.

No problem, glad it helped.
BTW, if you want to drop your noise level more, either the CU or GPU heatsink/fans would be the next thing to work on. |

Haha! My initial enthusiasm, and relief at having ripped out the old power supply has subsided a day in: I can hear this thing droning on too! The contrast had me, i think. I'm really quite depairing of this machine, having spent all my time thus far trying to kill its noise, and little of what I want to do. I might sink some money into a 'new', quiet machine (if I can find one!), and sell this on, as I seem only to have wasted time and money on it so far.

Buying a 'quiet' system might end up costing more than fixing your current system. Most of the 'quiet' systems are Atom based as well, and that could be a bit slower than your current CPU.
About all that could be making much noise is the CPU and GPU heatsink/fans, and case fans (if you have any). You'd be better of getting a silent PCIe video card (nVidia GT220, GT430, GTS450 or ATI/AMD 5450/6450, 5570, 5670). A decent heatsink with a quiet 120mm fan should take care of the CPU, and replace any 80mm/92mm/120mm case fans with quieter models. BTW, once you do get the noise level down, you might be suprised at what noises you notice that have never been audible before. I ran a very quiet system for years, and you know what used to annoy me? The %^&#*! HDD rattling... |
