well when i start vncserver i use the following:

Code:
vncserver -geometry 1024x768 -depth 24 :1
this starts a new virtual desktop on display :1 with 1024x768 res and 24 bit color.

you could do basicaly the same thing:

Code:
vncserver -geometry 800x600 -depth 16 :1
that will start a viruatl desktop on display :1 with 800x600 res at 16bit color.
