So, if I replace rm -rf /var with rm -rf /var/*, it will delete everything IN and UNDER /var, but not /var itself? Or what about using mv instead of cp? I'm off to try this as soon as you answer this last question. Wish me luck, and if the system doesn't die, I'll get back here and let you know how it went! Thanks a million!

Chris

Sorry about the hour difference I didn't know my response was holding you back

Yeah, mv would be fine. I prefer cp over mv for things like this just in case something happens (like power outtage), but that's just me being paranoid...

Good Luck, and hope to see you back soon.

Cool

I would use 'cp -a' to move the data to a new partition.

[quote]
-a, --archive
Preserve as much as possible of the structure and attributes of the original files in the copy (but do not preserve directory structure). Equivalent to -dpR.

-d, --no-dereference
Copy symbolic links as symbolic links rather than copying the files that they point to, and preserve hard links between source files in the copies.

-p, --preserve
Preserve the original files' owner, group, permissions, and timestamps.

-R
Copy directories recursively, and do the right thing when objects other than ordinary files or directories are encountered. (Thus, the copy of a FIFO or special file is a FIFO or special file.)

Well, first off, let me say THANK YOU for helping me with this. I tried it last night, and...

It failed unfortunately. I won't get into the specifics of what I think went wrong, but suffice it to say that it was probably human error on my part. the /var directory and all of its contents I moved to the new partition got deleted in one of those steps, and afterwords, the system services would not start because there was no /var. I think I know why this happened, but I won't worry about it. Basically, I accidentally created a var INSIDE a var, and the system couldn't find it. I am completely rebuilding the server from scratch now, and doing it right this time!

I have the server rebuilt to the point where I can get internet access directly from it (obviously), but I still cannot get internet access from any of the Windows workstations attached to it. I am also having a problem with sendmail. If you're interested in helping me with those issues, check out the post I will make in the networking forum. I'm going to go do that now.

Again, Master C especially, THANK YOU!! You are da man.

Chris

PS: I just made the networking post, so if you want to help, please click here

Thanks! I got this from the link that you posted (and Drew rightfully closed ). I'm glad I could help out a bit. I'll check out that networking post in a bit to see if I can lend a hand at all.

If you ever need to "grab" my attention in the future, feel free to email me, it's under my posts, or in my profile.
