Questions about an .avfs folder in Home

I have a hidden folder in my Home directory labelled .avfs.
I gather it is some kind of virtual file system. It is hard to find anything on the 'net to tell me what its for and what software accesses it. Maybe it's left over from an install that didn't clean up after itself; I really don't know. So I worry about it being there.

The "properties" show that is 141.7 TB - which is interesting because the HDD it sits on is only 1TB.
-What use it?
-It is important?
- Will it break anything if I delete it?

tThanks for your thoughtful and knowledgeable answers.

AVFS is a virtual filesystem, allowing to look into compressed archives or view remote files, cf. https://sourceforge.net/projects/avf/?source=directory

What you see in ~/.avfs is your whole filesystem fuse mounted, that's why it looks so big, but it actually adds no space.

It can be used by e.g. file managers like worker to look into archives.

Keep it.

Thanks for your reply.

I was using rsync and it was trying make a back up of it but kept getting stuck. The file is locked in the Home directory but the part that rsync did manage to save showed what you said. It seems like a mirror of my file system.

As you suggest, I'll keep it but I'll get rsync to step over it.

Thank you again.

I do the same for ~/.gvfs (also a dir for a virtual file system).

First rule in Linux. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.
It is good that you asked but why is the first "instinct" to delete?
I can only imagine where that bad habit came from.

Compare to
Code:
-r-------- 1 root root 128T Jun 17 05:30 /proc/kcore
From a "non broken" system.

Yes, they are Virtual

That's all I got.
