Question and Answer Help for Compiling the Kernel

Hey, I have spent a total of about a month trying to figure out what device drivers I need to make Linux work correctly. I was just wondering if there was a question and answer type document that tells you what you need to install if you want to make something work? A document like:
2. I Cannot Change the Resolution of the Command Prompt through Lilo
You must enable frame buffer support Device Drivers->Graphics Support->Support for Frame Buffer Devices. You must then select the appropriate graphics card driver. Then under Device Drivers->Graphics Support->Console Display Driver Support enable both Video Selection Mode Support and Framebuffer Console Support. Edit the script for your boot loader.
I think a document like this would help out so many aspiring Linux users.

The net is full of kernel howto's. Problem is that if everything about every driver is in one single howto, it would be huge and wading through it all would take a lot more time than googling a single problem. The kernel docs are also quite extensive but you have to know approximately what you're looking for. If you don't know, there's always LQ

I'm not talking about an ultimate tutorial. I'm talking about a document that would tell you what you need to have compiled into the kernel in order to make certain things work. The document in no way tells what you need to do. The example I gave ealier only shows what needs to be enabled and what drivers you will have to find. The beginning linux user has no idea what a frame buffer does or what it allows you to do, but if he had access to something like this, he would find out quickly. A document like this would give the new linux user a hint of where to look.

I hope this makes the purpose more clear.
