I don't really know if I posted this in the right place so mods please move this to wherever...
I have noticed that there seems to be a generaly recent influx of people wanting to try out Kali Linux because they want to be the cool 1337 h4x0rz like on tv or something along those lines and at the same time there also seems to be quite a few people who have no idea that it is a tool box and not an actual OS...
Long story short... What popular TV Show/YouTube Video/Blog promoted the heck out of it because these people are not all some kind of hive mind who just got the same idea all at once.
Why is Kali Linux suddenly cool?
Oh and don't say this didn't crop up over night because my digging through to archives of topics about it says it pretty much did.
Distribution: Currently: OpenMandriva. Previously: openSUSE, PCLinuxOS, CentOS, among others over the years.

You might wanna have a look at the following links:

It'd still be useful to start out asking Kali N00bs where they got the idea, just to be sure. There might be other vectors as well.
A few years ago there was a problem with XAMPP spreading too. I would have liked to find the source of that and address it directly rather than playing whack-a-mole with XAMPP questions.
If anyone has contacts inside the Kali project or the company sponsoring the project, it might be useful to get their help. Specifically they could contact the Mr Roboto writers and have them add in a scene where one or two the characters with the most 1337 sk1llz mention something about getting where the are by training up on Linux Mint first before moving on to Kali.

It is more idiots who buy apple products or other insane guys. use apple because they are now respected as a human being.
the kernel is the kernel. the userspace is from gnu. it is just a matter on how to set them up.
and the package manager of course which can make linux fun or a headache.

Honestly I use linux since Suse 6.2 or Slackware 96. Except recently when i was banned on forums.gentoo.org I never ever heard about Kali linux. I know about some tools of course.
Kali is in my point of view some no name distro, hardly known.
I do use linux on a daily basis for quite a while.
I think gentoo is more a bad guys distro as it offers many of those special tools.
Make ANYONE that wishes to download it fill out a questionnaire about it (and their skill level);
...I personally would love to see this happen.
And if they get ANY questions wrong, particularly the first two lists above; they see something like the following:
Our download servers have REFUSED the request to download Kali Linux for you -- please contact us.
Hate to break it to you, this has been attempted previously when it was "Backtrack"
They put such an emphasis on the documentation that post-install the user would fire up their bitchen new l33t browser and attempt to register at their forums.
The user would complete the registration steps and attempt to login. Denied.
Register again? Taken user name yours is. "Forgot Password" utility... sent and received. WTF?
As it turns out, the "user" did not read the documentation nor the pre-amble warning during the install where they were instructed to ensure that cookies were enabled prior to logging in at the forums.
I found the method clever.
Needless to say, the user wasn't attentive.
So you think you are clever when you allow cookies which track your internet habits?
@ jsbjsb001
I do not get the point of those specialised distros. It is not like that you can not change e.g. gentoo to such behaviour.
Also I see some sparks of such specialised distros and than they vanish. I looked recently in a few of those specialised distros. One release like knoppix than a very long break.

Just sayin'
Dag nam it...
I still say they should do it again, screw the idiots that think that they can just become Ed Snowden overnight...
