Question about mplayer
Ok, I'm running Slackware 9 in KDE 3.1 I downloaded the latest version of mplayer, and I configured it and everything, but when I try to run the command "mplayer" nothing happens, but if I go to an mp3 or something, and right click, and open with Mplayer.. it will play the song, but mplayer is no where in sight... Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

You probably didn't compile it with the --enable-gui option.
./configure --help

You don't **HAVE** to use a gui. Mplayer is a command line application, you can run it with parameters:
mplayer /path/to/song
mplayer /path/to/movie
And it'll play the song/movie.
Cool

Yeah, me too, just giving the alternative
Oh, and I guess the command to start the gui would be advisable:
gmplayer
Cool

Well, I reconfigured mplayer and all, and then I typed in gmplayer and got this:

well the error clearly states there is no skin found.. install a skin .... http://mplayerhq.hu OR just don't use the GUI it's a redundant experience, so much easier and quicker to go from a terminal

Ah - the memories....
I remember beating my head against the RTFM, but as I think maybe you are aware - mplayer is pretty damn nifty. (Can I say damn?)
Take your time - reread the installation instructions and look for the GUI link . Also download a Skin .
I would also suggest creating a menu shortcut that links to gmplayer. This will then allow you to open mplayer (in gui form) without having to give it a file right off the bat. it also has nifty controls like full screen etc.
I notice on one of the recent builds that a lot of that is incorporated in the commandline and on the fly while it is playing which is way cool too, but I have had issues with the crazy hardware I am running.... nforce (1) so I haven't isolated all of my probelms, but for the most part so far - it rocks...
any ideas on how to create a DVD? anyone.

Thanks, the link helped me to get it to work... The only problem is that everytime I try to open it... it says something about New Skin error... try changing the font or something like that.. but I can still play mp3s.... is there any type of playlist option?

Ok, I found that option but I have more problems..... This error pops up everytime I put on a song...
Error: New_face failed, maybe the font path is wrong. Please supply the text font file (~/.mplayer/subfont.ttf)
Also while I'm playing songs... it lags for a minute....and my whole machine lags.. .through every song.

FONT issue...
linuxquestions lost my first reply , so here goes one more try...
Yep - you need to install a FONT .
It works without it unless you need subtitles or CC. That is all the font is for. mplayer troops on though without one...
I highly recommend reading the documentation . They have done a smash up job with both the software and docs...
I highly recommend the plugin for your browser also.
Good luck and glad I could be of help.
