Question Question about Lynx

One question about the Lynx browser; where does it save the files that you download with it? I typed in the link for the Half-Life dedicated server .bin file, and it said: application/octet-stream D)ownload, or C)ancel? I picked download, and it downloaded, but didnt tell me where it saved it to.

One more thing, what is a .bin file, is it a compressed file archive like .tar.gz and .zip or is it something else?

I know this a simple question, but Lynx's main site said nothing about where it downloaded the file to.

But I still can't believe I posted here in Lynx, on my 486 too !!

It might download to the users home directory by default, not for sure though, never actually downloaded a file using Lynx. If its not there, try to search for the name of the file with the file command.

To search the whole hard drive do this:

find / -name filename

A .bin file is a binary format file. I think of it like a .exe file in the Windows world. Usually to install it, you just run it from the command line.

It usually downloads the whole thing and then asks you where to save the file, the whole thing I guess will be in /tmp

i found the file, now what?

Thanks for the help so far guys. Anyways, I've resolved the issue of getting the file on my linuxbox, and I tried going into the directory where the "hlds.bin" file is located and typed the name of the file at the command line, and it said "command not found" (which, according to trickykid's comparison it should have run like an EXE); I was just wondering if there was some other prefix or parameter that I should add before the filename (hlds.bin) to get the file to run. If not, is there some sort of other program that I need to use to run the file for me?

No luck....

Well, I tried running the the command ./linuxhlds.bin (which is the actual name of the file, I mentioned hlds.bin above for generic purposes) and it said "permission denied". Then I tried "sh linuxhlds.bin" and it said, "cannot execute binary file". So, for last resort diagnostic purposes, I will walk u through how I got the file to my linuxbox. I downloaded the file "hlds_l_3110_full.bin..bin" from file planet to my Win98 machine (due to problems I had earlier). Then I used samba client to get the file from the Wind0ze machine onto the linuxbox; I put it in the /home directory and renamed the file "linuxhlds.bin", and that's when I tried the above remedies to get the file to run. But... notice how I did change the file extension (let alone the file name) from '.bin..bin' to '.bin' Would that have any effect on the outcome of the above mentioned commands, or is there still yet another way to run the Half Life dedicated server file? That's all I need to know, from there on I know what to do. If u guys could give any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

BTW, ignore the different name for now, I'm just posting from a different cpu.

I wouldn't rename the file first of all, unless there were specific instructions to do so on the site you downloaded from.

Then make sure that the file has execute permission, and if it does not then do a:

chmod a+x <filename>

then runthe commands that were posted in previous reply's, and it should execute after that.

finally....

It worked, i just had to run the chmod command and then rerun the 'executable'. I'd just like to thank everybody for your help. I'll have my Half-Life dedicated server up and running in no time at all.
