question about extending partitions

Code:
ray@media:~$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda2 37G 1.9G 33G 6% /
tmpfs 443M 0 443M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/hda1 456M 23M 410M 6% /boot
/dev/hdb2 37G 8.9G 26G 26% /home
i have 2 40G (well 37G) drives in my system. i dedicated the entire second (slave) drive to my /home i would like to take a large percentage of the 1st hda and give it to /home as well to increase the size of /home

is there an easy way to do this without messing things up, or can i just creat a directory in / and chown root ray and be done with it?

What you want to do sounds like using LVM.
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/index.html

However, I don't know if you can set it up on an already installed system. Your second option would work also.
You might want to mount it under the root dir and make a sym-link in your home directory for it.
