Question Question about changing permissions.

I managed to get my windows partition mounted while running
linux. The problem I'm having now is, I can't get into that directory unless
I'm logged in as root. I've tried using chown and chmod to change
the permissions but that hasn't worked so far. I know there is a program
where I can change/edit users. I've been unable to locate it but I know
it's there. Is that where I need to make the changes to give the correct
permissions? If not then what should I be doing?

Thanks,

JMC

Did you add it to your /etc/fstab file ?? If so, what does that file look like ? Also check the permissions of the /dev/hdaX ( where X is the number corresponding to the actual partition of your windows partition ).

I did not edit the /etc/fstab file. I used the following command:
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows

The permissions of /dev/hda2 are as follows:
lr-xr-xr-x

First, I had to find out where the windows partition was. To do this I used the mandrake control center and looked under my hardware profiles. It gave me specifics on each partition. It told me hda2 was a NTFS.

To mount the NTFS i used the su command to get root privleges.
Then I created a windows directory under /mnt.
I then exectued the following command:
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda2 /mnt/windows

It gave me compete access to all the files on the windows partiton. Even got to check out some of those 'hidden' windows files.

I see this is an old post, but I have an update for it...

Thank you for the info on how to mount it. Since then I have managed to get it to boot each time I boot (by editing the fstab as tricky said). But I also added to the fstab the user option. I think that was the one that made it so my users can access it. The line is something like:
/dev/hda2 /mnt/windows ntfs auto,user,ro 0 0

I think the 'user' entry is the entry needed for the users to access it. It's just my theory though. But my users ARE able to access windows. Any luck yet?
