Query: any history log on "Top"

Hi all,

I would like to find out is there anyway to check on the history log for the Linux load performance prior to a reboot.

Sometimes, we couldn't log into the linux box due to high CPU utilization and the only way is to hard reboot it.

And after the reboot , we would like to know what had causes the high CPU utilization.

So is there a way to check for the log for the load performance information prior to a reboot?

Thanks in advance for any great input.

Regards,
Justin Chan

There is and the acronym you're looking for is "SAR". You have to install, configure and run something like Atop, Dstat or Collectl first. I suggest you don't blithely install any of them right away but test all 3 of them (in a non-production environment?) so you can see what details each of them can provide.

*Note that remote monitoring (Monit, Nagios, Zabbix?) would be preferable as you can set thresholds for alerts and then investigate before load comes a problem.
**Also note that if this is about Java then you should (also) use snmp4j or similar tools to measure statistics inside the JVM blackbox.
