PuTTY/OS X SSH confusion

I am trying to access a Linux server from the OS X (Panther) ssh client and I have noticed the bash key binding for my backspace key is ignored. That is to say: if I access the server with the Windows PuTTY client, backspace deletes one character to the left according to my bash profile instructions, but when I access it with the native SSH client in Panther, it deletes one character to the right (the same as a 'delete' key stroke).

Is there some way that I can modify my Mac settings so that I don't have to modify my emacs settings every time I switch platforms? It is exceedingly annoying as it is now.

AFAIK there's the option to modify backspace behaviour within puTTY.
